JUBILEE YEAR 2025 ‘Pilgrims of Hope’

(Spes non Confundit – Hope Does Not Disappoint)

3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time 26th Jan: Focus: Rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength. – The priest-scribe Ezra proclaims the Law of Moses to the Jewish people who had returned from exile in Babylon. Upon hearing the words of the law for the first time in a generation, the people weep. Their sorrow at not having adhered to the law for so long should call attention to our own infidelities to God’s law. But most of all, this people’s wholehearted response to the law can fill us with gratitude to God for revealing his merciful love to us in Jesus Christ.

The Sacred Heart Messenger magazine

Ireland's biggest-selling religious magazine

The value & importance of Prayer is referenced by several contributors in the February Messenger: John Scally describes it as his refuge, particularly in times of crisis or struggle; Margaret Naughton writes that it gives her strength & courage in her ministry as a healthcare chaplain; Andrea Hayes relies on it to cope with living with chronic pain; & Nikolaas Sintobin, whose most recent book is Praying with the Bible, suggests that the best way to pray is whatever it is that helps us to grow in our communion with God & Jesus right now.

The issue also carries articles on three significant figures in the Church, two of them Irish female saints whose feast days occur during February. St Gobnait was born in Co Clare in the sixth century, but her shrine in Baile Bhúirne, Co Cork, is not just a relic of the past, but very clearly an active sanctuary of living prayer today. St Brigid was a woman of strength, courage & deep faith, who acquired even in her own lifetime an authority & breadth of influence almost unheard of for a woman at that time. Pedro Arrupe SJ was one of the most notable Jesuits of the 20th century, who based his leadership on a 'faith that creates justice', who founded the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) & whose life was an example of service & compassion, humility & profound faith. The cause for his canonisation is ongoing.

Anne Marie Lee writes about the power of words to encourage, to praise, to express love, but also to hurt & humiliate & Fr Vincent Sherlock echoes her in urging caution & care with the words we use to others & that sometimes 'it's alright in talking, but no harm to say nothing'. Along with our regular reflections, competitions, crosswords & cookery, as well as our RE:LINK supplement which this month looks at the terrible problem of homelessness, the February Messenger gives food for thought during this first month of Spring.
