24^th Sunday in Ordinary Time 11^th August: Focus: There is much joy when the lost are found. – When we lose something we tend to be tense & anxious until it is found. Then there is blessed relief! Similarly, when our relationship with God is broken we feel a void that gnaws at our being until we remember that God’s mercy endures forever. All we have to do is repent & seek reconciliation. And when this happens, God enfolds us with his love.

PARISH OFFERTORY COLLECTION ENVELOPES

The parish offertory envelope boxes for 2023 are available at the church doors. Sincere thanks to all who are using the envelopes, these contributions have ensured that the parish has not fallen into financial difficulty, despite the parish finances being badly impacted by prolonged periods of lockdown because of the pandemic. This money enables us to maintain the parish churches to a high standard. It is heartening that so many are keen to see our church renewed & refreshed. Using the envelopes also facilitates the parish in availing of the Revenue tax-back, which is a great financial benefit for our parish. The Offertory Collection is used to maintain the two churches in the parish & the parochial house. This covers the cost of heating, lighting, insurance, painting & decorating, the diocesan levy, church requisites & stationary needs, sanitizing & general maintenance. If you require a box of envelopes, please let me know & I will add your name to the parish database. The new roof has been completed on Mullinabreena Church, this was a big undertaking, but necessary. If you are in a position to help, please know that your support is most welcome. North West STOP extends our THANKS to Rebecca Gilmartin & the community of Tubbercurry & surrounding areas who took part in Sunrise for STOP on July 31^st. Thank you also to all who donated in support of our free counselling service. The entire campaign raised €14,300, ensuring mental health counselling provision for 45 people.  Including online donations, the Tubbercurry area raised €1,175 of those funds. Thank You! Free counselling through North West STOP can be accessed by phone/text on 086 777 2009.

Achonry Farmers Market & Café at the Hub: We would like to encourage people to support both our Community Café & our Local Farmers Market. These amenities offer ideal opportunities for people to get together & are instrumental in creating a dynamic & cohesive Community for us all to live in. Café is open Saturday & Sunday 10am-2pm, with Market on Saturday 10am-1pm. 

A workshop for parish choirs & folk groups, including second level school choirs, will be offered at two venues in the diocese in September. These will be led by Regina Deacy, choir director in Ballina. The first workshop will be held in the Parish Church, Swinford, on Wed 21^st Sept starting at 7.30 p.m. The workshop will be repeated on Wed 28^th in Tubbercurry Church, at 7.30 pm.

Traditional music classes will resume in The Family Resource Centre Tubbercurry on Monday 12^th September. Beginner classes start at 6.15pm, intermediate & advanced classes at 7pm for tin whistle flute & fiddle. Contact Michael Hurley 086 6036243.

Covid 19: The number of deaths worldwide is now at 6,500,552 (official figure), the true figure is nearer to 18 million. Republic of Ireland deaths 7,798. That’s 18 deaths in Ireland last week. The number of positive cases in Ireland is 1,657,356.

North West STOP are running our annual Mental Health awareness campaign ‘Odd Socks Day’10^th October, World Mental Health day, to connect with our communities in relation to good Mental Health.

"A world at prayer is a world at peace"

Season of Creation 2022: Runs from Sept 1^st (World Day of Prayer for Creation) to October 4^th (Feast of St. Francis of Assisi). This Season is a wonderful opportunity to respond to the call of Pope Francis to listen to the cry of the earth & the cry of the poor. The theme for this year’s season is “Listen to the Voice of Creation” & takes the story of Moses & the Burning Bush as its inspiration: “I have heard their cry…I know their sufferings…Come, now! I will send you…I will be with you” (Ex 3: 1-12). 

Today, the prevalence of unnatural fires are a sign of the devastating effects that climate change has on the most vulnerable of our planet. Creation cries out as forests burn, animals flee, & people are forced to migrate. Record temperatures across the world this year have shown us that climate change is affecting all regions & all systems & will make parts of the world uninhabitable for human beings. On the contrary, the fire that called to Moses as he tended the flock on Mt. Horeb did not destroy the bush. This flame of the Spirit revealed God’s presence, affirmed that God heard the cries of all who suffered & promised to be with them & us as we follow in faith to work for justice, to work for a more sustainable world.

In this Season of Creation, this symbol of God’s Spirit calls us the global Christian family to awaken to the urgent need to heal our relationships with creation & with each other & to encourage our parish communities to do the same, “for we know that things can change!” (Laudato Si’, 13).  

Mary’s Meals: Mary’s Meals has continued to grow &, now in our 20^th year, is providing meals for 2,279,941 children every school day in 20 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America & the Caribbean. It costs just €18.30 to feed a child in a place of education for an entire school year & we guarantee that at least 93% of all donations goes directly towards our charitable activities. This is only made possible because of our army of volunteers; both at home & in our programme countries. However wonderful this is, our work has a long way to go. A global hunger crisis looms, & the number of hungry people has doubled in two years, while those living in outright famine have increased 500% since 2016. It is estimated that there are lots of punts/pence and old sterling still in circulation. We are appealing for your old punts/pence, old sterling & other currencies that are lying around the house in jars & tins. You don’t need to count it. We are willing to collect it from you if you are willing to donate it! Copper cents are welcome also. If you are a prepay customer on your mobile phone & have unused credit at the end of the month, you can use it to donate to Mary’s Meals. Just text the word “JOY” to 50300. Texts cost €4.
