3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time 23rd January: Focus: The law of the Lord delights the human heart & guides the steps of our lives. – Today’s Gospel opens with the words & intentions of Luke the Evangelist. He writes a Gospel – a narrative of the events regarding Jesus Christ that will draw from the memories of those who witnessed his life, death, & resurrection, & who have handed on his teachings to future generations. We cling to that Gospel message, which reminds us of God’s mercy & challenges us to live in Christ.

Catholic Schools Week 2022 - Living Life to the Full!

Spring is in the air, the days are getting brighter, the snowdrops and daffodils are starting to appear.  There is a great sense of optimism and hope!  What a lovely time to celebrate Catholic Schools Week!  This year we reflect upon the theme of “Living life to the Full.”  This is at the heart of Jesus’ message; he wants us to experience all the positives life has to offer us.  We have come through a difficult time, but one senses we are emerging out of it.  If anything, the last two years have taught us the preciousness of life.  This message is at the heart of Catholic education.

In Achonry Diocese there is a strong tradition of Catholic education.  We are very fortunate to have such committed principals, teachers, staff, and Diocesan support persons who continue to pass on the faith in these changed and changing times.  Despite increased secularisation, so evident in our society, the passing on of a healthy faith to our children remains a critical challenge to all of us who are committed to the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.  The current debate around education is healthy as it has encouraged us to reflect further on the meaning and outlook of Catholic education today.  It is also important to emphasise that our Catholic Schools welcome children of other faiths and none.  Our schools are welcoming communities precisely because they are Catholic.

I encourage our schools to celebrate this week with enthusiasm and energy.  As we embark upon this special week let us be inspired by Pope Francis when he told us; “No one can demand that religion should be relegated to the inner sanctum of personal life.  An authentic faith – which is never comfortable or completely personal – always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it.” (Evangelii Gaudium # 183).

As we celebrate Living Life to the Full in our Catholic Schools this week may we be inspired to change the world by promoting & living Gospel values!

With kind regards and every blessing, +Paul Dempsey, Bishop of Achonry.
