Fr Paul Dempsey appointed Bishop of Achonry Diocese

Pope Francis appointed Father Paul Dempsey, PP of Newbridge Parish in the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin, as Bishop of the Diocese of Achonry on 27 January. Speaking in the Cathedral of the Annunciation and Saint Nathy, following the announcement, Father Dermot Meehan, Adm. of Achonry Diocese said, “Today, Father Paul Dempsey comes into our assembly as Christ’s messenger, having accepted his appointment by Pope Francis as pastor of the people and priests of Achonry. We warmly welcome his appointment &, on behalf of the priests, religious & people of the diocese, I thank him for accepting it. It is a reason for rejoicing for us in Achonry that a priest of Father Paul’s calibre & extensive experience in pastoral ministry in his native diocese of Kildare & Leighlin comes to us as our new bishop. We assure him of our prayers as he prepares for his new role & we ask God to bless him with joy, contentment & peace in his ministry among us.” Speaking to the congregation of almost 800, gathered in the cathedral for the announcement, Father Dempsey said, “I’m sure you can understand how daunting it is to take on the role of bishop in a new diocese. I’m conscious of my own unworthiness & sinfulness as I take on this role. I ask you to be patient with me as I endeavour to get to know the priests, people, deacons and religious of the diocese in the coming weeks and months.” The Episcopal Ordination of the new Bishop of Achonry will take place on 19 April 2020, Divine Mercy Sunday. Achonry Mullinabreena Community Enhancement group (AMCE) have decided to proceed with a 25 year lease on Carrowmore school to ensure that it remains in use by the entire community. This building has played a pivotal role in so many of our lives & we would love for generations to come to have Carrowmore school as part of theirs. In order to do this, we are asking for your help in covering the initial costs of €5,000 which we will incur including conveyance fees, stamp duty costs and getting a conservation study carried out. There is a GoFundMe page set up for donations or donation & can be made through the following bank account BIC BOFIIE2D & IBAN IE88BOFI90549138522058.

As a community we would like to ensure the longevity of this listed building built in 1834 as a social hub for the community as a whole therefore re-establishing it's place within the community it once served. The school would increase social capital to enhance the enrichment of our community when combined with other amenities eg Knocknashee walkway and the future greenway that is planned on the railway. Our vision is that it will become a heritage/visitor centre and offer meeting rooms to the community in addition to St Nathy's Hall. With the long term lease in place we can apply for public funding to assist with the internal remedial works needed to progress the project further. It is hoped that past pupils of the school, the local community & the diaspora of Achonry Mullinabreena abroad will support this project to ensure that this beautiful stone building at the foot of Knocknashee which has stood well with the passage of time continues to serve our community. Please spread the message to your family & friends.  All donations no matter how big or small will be gratefully appreciated and all funds raised will be utilised in the school refurbishment. Also we are hoping to organise a book swap/sale in CARROWMORE SCHOOL at the end of Feb. More details later.
