Afternoon Tea at Cultibar House: The Church of Ireland parishes of the Achonry Group (Tubbercurry & Killoran, Rathbarron) are holding a joint fund-raising event at Cultibar House, Collaney (by kind permission of Mr Arthur Livingston), on Sunday 18th Sept at 3.30pm. The event will be an Afternoon Tea prepared by the ladies of the parishes. The charge will be €10 for adults & €5 for children & the proceeds will go towards the Tuam, Killala & Achonry Diocesan Missionary Project. The project is called Maji' the Swahili word for water, as we strive to bring clean water to the 3000 people who live in the area surrounding Oltiasika in Kenya. At present the women have a 10km journey for water each day. The project involves raising the money to completely refurbish & repair the water collection & storage system at Oltiasika. The old rusted corrugated iron collection system will be replaced with a concrete 'slipway' funnelling system down which rainwater will run off the side of the mountain into the collection tanks. These will be cleaned out & repaired & covers will be built for these tanks. This will keep the water fresh & clear of debris. A standpipe will be fitted to the water system which will allow for access to the water. Once the rainy season comes & the tanks fill this provides water for a year & with the proper upkeep of the system, which would be guaranteed, this project will provide a lifetime of water for the Maasai living in the area. We trust that this event will be well supported, not only by parishioners, but also by the wider community

2016 marks the 75th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Franciscan Friar, at the World War II concentration camp in Auschwitz, Poland. St. Maximilian demonstrated heroic charity by giving his life in place of a fellow prisoner who was about to be executed. St. John Paul II declared St. Maximilian Kolbe the “patron saint of our difficult century,” and a Martyr of Charity.

St. Maximilian Kolbe is the patron saint of prisoners, journalists, families, the pro-life movement and the chemically addicted.

To commemorate this historic anniversary, the Franciscan Friars Conventual of the Our Lady of the Angels Province, in concert with Kolbean institutes and Franciscans worldwide, are pleased to sponsor a pilgrimage of St. Maximilian’s relics.

Please join us as we welcome the relics of St. Maximilian Kolbe to Ireland 1st & 2nd October 2016, Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Fairview Strand, Fairview, Dublin 3
